2022 Catalyst Awards a HUGE Success!

Updated: Apr 15, 2022

The 2022 Catalyst Awards––held virtually on April 5, 2022––was an inspirational celebration of Science Club for Girls' 27 years of empowering girls and women in STEM. With over 275

registrants, the event raised more than $280,000 to support the expansion of SCFG's free, high-quality, mentor-led STEM programs for girls and gender-expansive youth.

We are so grateful to the many, many people who contributed to make this event a tremendous success.

Thank you to our remarkable awardees: Dr. Yvonne Greenstreet, CEO of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals; Dr. Mariana Matus, CEO of Biobot Analytics; and Dr. Nancy Simonian, CEO of Syros Pharmaceuticals. Thank you to Attorney General Maura Healey for sharing kind and encouraging words. Thank you to our fantastic emcee: Latoyia Edwards, NBC10 Boston Morning News Anchor. Thank you to the participants, Junior Mentors, and Mentors who shared their experience with Science Club for Girls: Bennie, Tamar, Addis, Ayaan, Tahoura, and Keilina. And thank you to all those who attended and donated to the event to help us reach the goal!

Inspiration was abundant at the Catalyst Awards, including the following words shared by members of our community:

"Science Club has helped me grow as a scientist and as a person."

-Addis, 8th grader and Junior Mentor

"In a world where––for girls of color especially––being in science is just so...abstract, I love how we can come back to these meetings and come back to Science Club for Girls and expect support from each other. Support in terms of knowledge, in terms of socially and emotionally...I just love that so much!"

-Tamar, 10th grader and Junior Mentor

"As I rise as a scientist, I look around and see that the women are missing, and I know that my own journey in science was supported by strong mentors who believed in me, so I want to pay that forward and be that person for other people."

-Tahoura Sajida Samad, MIT post-doc and longtime SCFG Mentor

"At Science Club for Girls, we believe that bringing more diverse perspectives to the STEM table will lead to better science, better technology, and better engineering––with advancements that will benefit all of our lives––like those made by our Catalyst Awardees here tonight.

We believe that every girl, no matter what her family’s means or background, deserves access to a high-quality, fun STEM education. We believe that representation matters––and that girls deserve role models who look like them and share similar life experiences. We believe that, together, we can transform the face of STEM."

-SCFG's Executive Director, Dr. Bonnie Bertolaet
