What it is like to be a JM?
Junior Mentors (JMs) are 7th to 12th grade girls from Cambridge Public Schools. JMs work with young girls; a key to being a JM is being a mentor. What is a mentor? A mentor is someone who serves as a teacher or trusted counselor, aiding and guiding the girls during their science activities. A JM should think of herself as a role model. A mentor is also a person who shares their own experiences, knowledge and wisdom with others. JMs also encourage the girls to do their best in the activities, in life, and overall in their academics.
JMs are involved in several workshops that help them visualize and understand the skills, the path, and the role of a community leader. During the workshops they understand what a mentor is and the role a mentor plays.
Being a mentor means developing leadership qualities. A JM works with the girls and is available to come to extra sessions, give extra assistance, and takes directions well.
Science Club for Girls is a remarkable program that allows young girls to experience the field of science by becoming a mentor. This club will answer the questions: "What about science is so interesting?", "how can science help me?", "what can I learn from working in the field of science?" Girls who are not sure what science is or why it can be a great line of work are highly encouraged to join and find out for themselves. Every semester a stipend is given to JMs who participate in the program for both semesters and follow the rules and regulations. Through this opportunity of being JMs, they will receive job-like experience.
